Glass options on your quote

The glass is where a lot of a window’s performance and price is decided. Understanding the main window glass options helps you choose the right specification for each room without paying for extras you do not need.

Low-E glass: the efficient default

Almost every modern quote specifies low-emissivity (low-E) glass as standard. A microscopically thin coating reflects heat back into the room while still letting light through, which is the single biggest contributor to a good U-value. If a quote does not mention low-E, question it — it is the baseline for energy-efficient double glazing and closely tied to the figures in our U-values and energy ratings guide.

Toughened and laminated glass: safety and security

Building regulations require safety glass in “critical locations” — low-level glazing, doors and areas beside them. Toughened glass is heat-treated so it is much stronger and shatters into small blunt pieces rather than shards. Laminated glass bonds two panes around a plastic interlayer, so it holds together when broken; it resists forced entry and is harder to break through quietly, which makes it popular for ground-floor windows and security-conscious homes.

Acoustic glass: for busy roads

If you live near traffic, a railway or a flight path, acoustic glass is worth considering. It uses panes of different thicknesses and a special interlayer to dampen sound, noticeably reducing outside noise. It costs more than standard glass, so it is usually specified only for the rooms that face the noise rather than the whole house.

Obscure and decorative glass

Bathrooms, en-suites and front doors often call for obscure glass, which comes in a range of privacy levels and patterns. Decorative options such as Georgian bars, leaded effects or coloured film let you match a period property. These are usually a modest add-on, but they should still appear as a line on the quote so you know what is included.
